Customer Service and Spoiled Brats

I'm tired of working hard, not to earn income, but to spend it. A few years ago I was shopping in a major retail store (not Walmart) with my children. With a cart completely full of groceries and everyday items I got in line. Shortly thereafter, a manager approached the clerk, shut down the line and turned off the light. My response was "you have got to be kidding me". She said the clerk needed a break and there was nothing that could be done. Not only was I insulted, but shocked that a manager could offer no other solution. I'm the customer, remember? I took my children and left the store and the full cart sitting in the aisle and said loudly "I work too hard to earn my money to have to work hard to spend it."
I could go on with my stories about poor customer service. Unfortunately it is an epidemic in this country. Good customer service is so rare that when it does occur, I actually thank the person for their assistance, something that used to be standard. Chuck Norris wrote an article on WorldNetDaily today about a similar topic and had this to say: "We are a society of permissiveness and apathy." Apathy is right.
My take is that we are a society that has not suffered, not lived through trying times and the result is lack of respect or accountability. If a store clerk loses their job, they move on to the next one. If they run out of jobs, unemployment is right there to catch them. There is no shame. There is no pride. There is no work ethic.
I don't have a solution for this problem. When customer service becomes intolerable, I just make the decision to no longer support the store. But I'm running out of options.
